Job Purpose:

 

The Senior Counsel is a legal manager on a collaborative, collegial and innovative legal team, responsible for offering solutions-oriented legal services to MAF business partners and the broader stakeholders we serve.

The Senior Counsel reports to the Senior Director and provides direct support to various business stakeholders on a variety of legal, compliance and risk issues, as well as coordination and oversight of work done with Legal Counsel(s) that the Senior Counsel may supervise.

Job Details – Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

 

  • Substantive Service Delivery / Matters:
  • Research and analysis of complex legal and compliance issues, as well as monitoring new issues that may arise or changes to regulatory requirements;
  • Advise and counsel middle-level and senior-level business leaders on diverse issues of law and compliance that arise in the daily operation of the business, as well as emerging challenges;
  • Respond to client inquiries – sometimes by handling the matter, but often by assigning it to another more appropriate team member;
  • Draft and review documents, memos, correspondence, and contracts, as well as helping business leaders interpret and understand legal and compliance matters or complex language or deals;
  • Create and deliver legal and compliance trainings and initiatives to help business people understand and stay informed of what the law requires, how they can manage risks appropriately, and when to ask for help; and
  • Support preparation and timely submission of mandated legal and regulatory filings.
  • Department Operational and Management Responsibilities:
  • Create self-directed plans with articulated goals, presented to and discussed with your Director or Senior Director;
  • Supervise Legal Counsel and coordinate with Senior Director in evaluating their performance;
  • Seek out efficient and effective ways to improve service delivery to drive business results;
  • Monitor budgets and assure proper financial management, tracking expense toward goals and completion of work;
  • Supervision and instruction of outside counsel and other suppliers retained to help the team deliver its work; and
  • Robust use of data and technology to drive efficiency and efficacy of legal workflow.

Qualifications, Personal Characteristics and Required Background/Experience:

Qualifications and Required Background:

Law degree and admission to practice/good standing in relevant jurisdictions

5+ years of substantive legal expertise, developed in a corporate or law firm setting serving sophisticated clients across a range of services.
